Creating a Positive Experience when Evaluating Trainers
I’ve discussed the VET professional development (PD) benefits of evaluating trainers while they train. While incredibly valuable, being evaluated mid-training can be a daunting experience for any trainer. So, how can we ensure the evaluation process is a positive experience for both the trainer and the evaluator?
The answer lies in preparation and the right mindset. Here are some practical steps to take:
Establish Clear Criteria
Start by defining the criteria that align with your RTO’s values and goals. Think about what creates a meaningful learning experience for students and ensures they leave the session with new knowledge or skills. Some useful criteria could include:
Building Rapport: Does the trainer engage and interact effectively with participants?
Facilitating Discussion: Are they encouraging participation, or simply delivering a one-sided lecture?
Leveraging Learners’ Experiences: Do they recognise and incorporate the knowledge and experiences learners bring to the session?
Allowing Time for Practice: Are participants given sufficient opportunities to apply new knowledge and skills during the session?
Once you have your criteria, document them in an evaluation form with space for comments and observations. This not only standardises the evaluation process but also provides constructive feedback to help trainers grow.
Foster a Supportive Environment
The goal of trainer evaluation isn’t to criticise but to improve. Set a supportive tone from the outset by framing the evaluation as a collaborative exercise. Communicate to trainers that the process is designed to help them refine their skills, not to point out flaws.
Evaluate with the Right Attitude
Approach the evaluation with an open mind and a focus on building trust. Be sure to:
Observe and listen actively.
Note both strengths and areas for improvement.
Provide feedback constructively, focusing on actionable insights.
Remember, the trainer should feel empowered to use the feedback as a stepping stone for growth.
The Benefits of Evaluation
Effective trainer evaluation benefits everyone involved. Trainers gain insights into their performance and areas for growth. Students enjoy improved training sessions tailored to their needs. And RTOs benefit from enhanced training quality, aligning with compliance requirements and fostering a reputation for excellence.
By implementing these practices, evaluating trainers can be a rewarding and productive experience. Stay tuned for an upcoming post on how to adopt the right mindset for evaluation success.
